Avignon

Avignon offers a magnificent urban landscape: overlooking the city and the Rhône, the Rocher des Doms crowns an exceptional group of monuments made up of the Saint-Bénezet Bridge, the ramparts, the Petit Palais, the Cathedral of the Doms and the imposing walls flanked by the four vast towers of the Palace of the Popes. This unique architectural ensemble is listed by UNESCO as World Heritage of Humanity.

The Palace of the Popes is the symbol of the Church’s influence over the Christian West in the 14th century. Begun in 1335 and completed in under twenty years, it is chiefly the work of two building popes, Benedict XII and his successor Clement VI.
